WARNING: The “Birds of Prey” trailer includes some saucy language.
Even without her Puddin’, Harley Quinn seems just fine on her own. You might even say fantabulous.
Margot Robbie‘s colorful, mallet-wielding antiheroine from 2016’s supervillain-filled “Suicide Squad” returns in Cathy Yan’s new female-centric DC superhero film “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).” And this time, she’s down one beau – her on-again, off-again boyfriend Joker (the Jared Leto version, not Joaquin Phoenix) – but gained a girl gang.
The first footage from “Birds of Prey” (in theaters Feb. 7) catches up with Harley, formerly known as psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel before falling for the Joker – and falling into a chemical bath.
‘I hate it so much’: Margot Robbie slams reporters calling her a ‘bombshell’
But Harley’s broken up with the Joker (again) and finds herself among a bunch of other Gotham City women in need of “emancipation.” She teams up with singer/buttkicker Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), crossbow-wielding Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and cop Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to protect teenage Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from the evil clutches of gang lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).
“Isn’t this fun? It’s just like a sleepover. We should order pizza! Make cosmos!” says Harley, who shares a Twizzler with her new pet hyena, gets what appears to be a Marilyn Monroe homage, dropkicks some dudes, struts while a building explodes behind her, and gives a lit stick of dynamite to a teen girl in a moving vehicle. (No one ever said she was the greatest role model.)
“Birds” is just a taste of the Harley to come, however: Director James Gunn started production on “The Suicide Squad” this week with a returning cast including Robbie, Viola Davis (as mastermind Amanda Waller), Joel Kinnaman (as Squad leader Rick Flag) and Jai Courtney (as Aussie nutball Captain Boomerang), plus new teammates Idris Elba, John Cena, Taika Waititi, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson and Nathan Fillion.
